peruses for the Piedmont Vocational Technical Center will go up 18 percent next year, from $129,662 to $162,874, a reflection of the 20 percent decline in federal and state support for vocational education, the superintendent explained.
Other nuqor increases come in capital outlay for ftirniture and equipment ($31,680 for the high school addition, $19,295 for the high school unrelated to the building project, $6,836 for the elementary school and $2,375 for the central office); the school lunch program ($10,000 to cover possible shortfalls in this formerly self-supporting program); transportation ($49,000 for two new school buses and $9,000 for a used pick-up truck).
The superintendent proposes no increases in instructional supplies for the high school or elementary school, the county’s contribution toward the fringe benefit of health insurance for school employees or the supplemental duty pay scale for teachers. In addition, Mr. Estabrook allows for only modest increases in bus repairs, fuel and maintenance. The last category is upped by just 10 percent from the current year in his proposed budget. The repairs to the heating systems at both school are offset by the $36,000 expended in 1986-87 for a new coal stoker for the high school’s furnace.
Only a handful of parents and teachers attended Tuesday’s special session and there were few questions from the School Board members. Next Tuesday, before the board’s regular business, the public will be given an opportunity to respond to the superintendent’s proposed budget. Then the School Board will begin its line by line review on March 17, with adoption to come at either that special session or a meeting the following week. The Board of Supervisors has asked to have the proposed 1987-88 school budget by March 27.
