Gallery opening July 4
The public is invited to the opening of an exhibition of paintings and poetry by Pat Townsend at Middle Street Gallery on Independence Day, July 4, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. The Gallery will be open all day with family art activities, including the creation of fancy hats and sidewalk chalk murals. Townsend’s show will be on display throughout July, along with new work by Gallery members. Gallery hours are 11 а. m. to 6 p.m. and by appointment.

CulpeperFest ’88, sponsored by the Culpeper Chamber of Commerce, will be held July 28 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Culpeper Agricultural Enterprises. This natural setting will host a variety of food, entertainment and exhibits reflecting local culture and lore. In addition, local businesses, industries, civic groups and volunteer organizations will display their “Culpeper Pride” by showing off their growing town. The Culpeper Agricultural Enterprises is two miles south on U.S. 29. Advance tickets only will be sold. Flint Hill carnival planned
The Flint Hill firemen’s carnival will be held Aug. 3-6. Anyone wishing to participate in the parade, which/ will be held Thursday, Aug. 4, at 6:30 p.m., is invited to contact Moe Walker at 675-3441, evenings.
Art history film at Gay St. Theater
The fifth film in the “Shock of the New” series about the nature and purpose of art in the 20th century will be shown Wednesday, July б, at 8 p.m. at Washington’s Gay St. Theater. Entitled “The Threshold of Liberty,” the film examines the Surrealists, including DeChirico, Ernst, Miro, Dali and Magritte. An informal discussion will be led by psychologist Denise Horton. The series is sponsored by Middle Street Gallery through the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities. Admission is free.
