Porter named

All-American

Jeff Porter, a junior at Francis Marion College in Florence, S. C., has been named to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics All-American baseball squad. As the Patriots’ starting rightfielder, Porter won an honorable mention nomination to the All-American team.

During the 1988 season, Porter set a school record for base hits in a year with 86 while leading the team in hitting with a .430 average. He slugged nine home runs, drove in 54 runs and stole 15 bases in 22 attempts. He also paced the team in runs scored (61) and contributed eight game-winning RBIs.

His efforts led Francis Marion to its first district baseball title in 12 years, as the squad compiled its ‘ best-ever season record, 35-13. By falling to Georgetown (Ky.) College in the Area 7 championship in a heartbreaking 13-12 loss, the Patriots missed their first trip to the NAIA World Series by one step.

Porter is the son of Jackie Porter ’ of Sperryville.
