Shortly after commencement exercises were held there on June 11, the floor of the new gym at Rappahannock County High School was sanded, the court lines were painted and the finish applied. Basketball coach Gary Leake has been anxious for the completion of the new facility, and next month he’s arranged for its baptism.
The Shot Doctor, former University of North Carolina star Ed Stahl, will bring his travelling basketball camp to RCHS for two three-day sessions. With him comes University of Southern California assistant coach Mike Dunlop. A former University of Iowa player himself, on the off-season he’s the Doctor’s assistant.
Coach Leake has arranged for the two sessions to be split into age groups to allow the participants to work with others of similar age and skill level. The first session, July 25, 26 and 27, will be for players ages 13-18. Then, younger players from 9-13 will get a chance to work with the Doctor on July 28,29 and 30.
The 13-year-olds, Coach Leake said, can play with either group, depending on their ability and confidence. The camps, he added, are coed.
The camp is open to any youngsters, and Coach Leake said he’s already heard from several Culpeper County players who want to attend.
The workouts begin at 8:30 each morning, and run until 5:30 p.m. Each participant is responsible for their own transportation and a bag lunch.
The cost is $89 for the three days, which includes a camp T-shirt. Each session is limited to 52 players. Coach Leake plans a registration session at the high school on Thursday, June 14 at 6 p.m. in the front
