At least 10 artisans will demonstrate old-fashioned crafts at this year’s expanded 19th Century Folk Craft Day Sunday, July 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the New Market Battlefield Park has announced.
Craftsmen will be grouped in and around the park’s historic Bushong House, where VMI cadets formed for their famous charge in the 1864 Battle of New Market. Some of the crafts will be offered for sale, a departure from prior years.
There will be demonstrations of hlacksmithing, spinning, weaving, outdoor bread baking, butter churning, chair caning, tatting and crocheting. Quilts will be on display, there will be a demonstration of piecing for, quilts and a verbal description of soap-making.
A contingent from the Palmetto Sharpshooters Light Infantry will load and fire old-fashioned muskets and Rice’s Artillery Unit will demonstrate 19th century cannon firing. One craftsman will show how guns were made in the 1800s compared to the modem rifle.
Behind the Bushong House visitors may see Shorthorn cattle, introduced into America in the 1700s and 19th century Suffolk and Dorset sheep. Historic vegetables, from
