Caution to fishermen
The Virginia Game Commission reminds fishermen that the state Department of Health has issued a warning against eating fish taken from the South Fork Shenandoah River from the Route 619 bridge downstream to the Shenandoah River headwaters; from the Passage Creek merger with the North Fork Shenandoah River downstream to the Shenandoah River headwaters; and fr6m the Shenandoah River headwaters (where the North and South Forks meet) downstream to the Virginia/West Virginia state line. The advisory was issued after tissue samples from fish taken from the river were found to have elevated levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), which are known to cause cancer in animals. The risk, health department officials said, is related to the amount of the chemicals in the fish, and the amount of fish eaten. Sport fishing may continue in the contaminated areas, but fishermen are advised to return all fish caught to the river, and not to eat them under any circumstances.
