The Board of Supervisors will appeal to the Washington Town Council to overturn the decision by the town's Architectural Review Board to deny the county’s application for an addition to the county jail.
“Their main concern was the encroachment on the historically significant chimneys,” County Administrator John McCarthy told the supervisors. “There were some lingering concerns about the summer kitchen.”
“Our architect Steve Biegel represented us well,” Mr. McCarthy said. “They wanted to know whether other alternatives had been considered. First they suggested a separate building. That would be unacceptable. Then they suggested a one-story hyphen connecting the two. With a third-floor kitchen, that would mean carrying the prepared food down two floors, through the connection and back up to the third floor to the day room to serve it.”
