As a leading Republican strategist told me over lunch weeks before the Democratic nomination fight was settled, “I’m pulling for Saslaw. Eddy won’t have any trouble at all beating him. But Beyer’s got lots of money and will spend a lot of it.”
He added that the fact Beyer won’t be well known going into the campaign may work to his advantage.
That’s because Beyer will bring no perceptible baggage into his run and can use extensive television advertising to portray himself as anything he wants to be.
“He can create his own image out of whole cloth without fear of too much contradiction. Most people who get a major party nomination for statewide office already hold some kind of elective office. You can dig back into the records and find votes and positions to use against them. This guy has no record to attack.”
Beyer proved convincingly by turning a candidacy that at first seemed hopeless into a winning one that he has outstanding organizational ability, can deal effectively with people, because of his car salesman background, know* the power of advertising and how to use it effectively, and is intelligent and articulate enough to deal with issues.
