He suggested that the supervisors consider raising the assessments on land in land use to an average of $2000 an acre. “We need to spread the tax base out more equitably. There are only 185 farmers; the rest are investors . . . We don’t want to shoot ourselves in the foot, but we don’t want the taxpayers subsidizing investors’ net worth.”
“You might wind up shooting yourself a little higher,” Mr. Anderson said. “That open land is not costing us as much as houses would on that land.”
“That’s a scare tactic,” Col. Bingham said.
Mr. Anderson said he had met a farmer in Prince William who said he sold 15 acres every year to pay his taxes before Prince William adopted land use taxation.
Mr. McCarthy said the only difference was whether there would be three or four years between the assessments. “Four years lets us do it on budget,” he suggested. He said the last reassessment had cost $75,000, but if the same firm bid for the next one it might be cheaper since so much information was already on their computers. “As an interim measure, we as a group could try to get information together,” he said.
The supervisors accepted the recommendation of the landfill advisory committee that the landfill be kept open two days a week until 7:30 in the evening rather than opening the public service area 24 hours per day or fencing off the dumpster^ from the rest of the public service area. Mr. McCarthy said the county would employ a temporary part-time employee for the extra eight hours per week.
