An Alexandria woman narrowly escaped death Monday afternoon when the car she was driving slammed into the Route 211 bridge which spans the Rappahannock River at the Fauquier-Culpeper County line.
According to Trooper D.P. Johnson, Jennifer Strozier, 21, was westbound when she lost control of her 1985 Honda and it ran off the right side of the pavement. Ms. Strozier attempted to bring the car back onto the pavement and apparently overcorrected, crossing both lanes before striking the abutment at the east end of the bridge.
Sheared nearly in two by its impact with the concrete pier, the car vaulted over the guardrail and fell about 20 feet onto the rocks on the east bank of the river, where it landed on its top. Ms. Strozier apparently managed to get out of the car and up the embankment to the highway, where she was picked up by a passing motorist and driven to K & D Service Center at Clevinger’s Comer.
She was taken to Fauquier Hospital by the Warrenton Volunteer Rescue Squad, where she was listed in serious condition in the intensive Care unit Tuesday. She suffered internal injuries and several major cuts in the accident.
Charges are pending in the accident, the trooper said, adding that Ms. Strozier was almost certainly wearing her seat belt. “That’s probably the only thing that saved her life.”
Fire and rescue personnel from the Amissville and Warrenton Volunteer Fire Departments also responded to the accident.
