School Superintendent David Gangel told the School Board last week he is trying to cut the state and local share of thetbudget by $200,000 so local taxpayers will not have to pick up state cuts.
He said he has has also set goals of keeping all programs intact, not cutting back staff and continuing to improve educational services.
Dr. Gangel said he does not plan to cut salaries, and that he also expects to keep intact the step increases that some employees are be eligible for.
He said he is trying to be “very creative” in proposing cuts to meet these goals and that he hasn’t yet located all $200,000 in savings.
He will present his proposed budget to the School Board at a special meeting March 5, and he said he does not intend to reveal details of proposed cuts until then.
Dr. Gangel told the board there are three different revenue projections from the state. The Governor’s proposal would cut Rappahannock by $202,000. The budget bill passed by the House of Delegates would limit the cut to $160,760, and the one passed by the state Senate would decrease Rappahannock’s cut to $123,207, but Dr. Gangel said he expects Governor Wilder to prevail.
