Meanwhile, the Panthers are taking advantage of the break by practicing their fundamentals, Coach Leake said. He plans practices each day except Sunday, and will focus on one aspect of the game each day.
“I’ve been telling them all year that the tournament is a completely new season. Our goal is to get to the regionals. To do that we’ve got to Win three games next week. We’re going to have to play 32 minutes every night.”
He said the team has shown “a new attitude, a new determination,” during the past several weeks. “We’ve been getting excellent leadership from Paul Hitt, Jay Butler and Bobby Jenkins.”
James Roy, the coach added, has shown excellent play, while Michael Ray Williams, Dearl Cloud, Jason Henry, Kenneth Baldwin and Daniel Deal have been rotating in the fifth starting slot. “We’ve been consistent all the way through the lineup. We’ve got the best nine players in the district, and if we get into the other team’s bench, I don’t think there’s another team that can beat us.”
The district tournament begins Monday evening in Timberville. Depending on te outcome of the first round games, the Panthers will play through the week, with the district championship game set for Friday, March I. The exact schedule is unknown at presstime.
