The Superintendent of Shenandoah National Park was recently notified by the U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration, that the National Park Service had received the “Award of Merit” for highway improvements to the Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park.
The famed Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park was built in the 1930’s by members of the Civilian Conservation Corps. The road winds along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains, offering panoramic views of the Piedmont and the Shenandoah Valley. The 105mile-long drive provides access to most of the park’s 700 camping and picnic sites, two lodges, two visitor centers, and more than 500 miles of hiking and horse trails.
