DAR chapter marks
U.S. History Month Representatives of the Culpeper Minute Men Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution met with Mayor Dean Morehouse for the signing of a Proclamation designating February as American History Month. Spot announcements of historical significance, past to present, have been placed in area high schools designed to be read over classroom loudspeakers. The Culpeper Minute Men Chapter has promoted the study of American History with an essay contest open to all fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth graders in Culpeper, Madison and Rappahannock counties. The 1991 topic is “What the Bill of Rights Means to Me.” The local chapter has urged citizens to fly their flags, to observe George Washington’s birthday, and to study the biographies of American patriots who sacrificed their lives and fortunes so we might live in a nation established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice and humanity. Annually, the DAR sponsors a national Good Citizen Contest to graduating twelfth graders, the winner receiving cash scholarships to the college of the individual’s choice. Faculty of the high school selects three outstanding students, which are submitted to the senior class members for vote of one as the school’s “DAR Good Citizen. ” Half of the national judging criteria includes the grade transcript, a letter of recommendation, and a personal questionnaire of service' to family, school, church, future plans, special interests, high school activities and awards. The student also describes his or her own qualities defined by the DAR as those of a good citizen: dependability, service, lead-' ership, patriotism (unselfish loyalty to American ideals). The other 50 percent is an essay written in the presence of a counselor, “Our American Heritage and My Responsibility to Preserve It,” using no reference material. The Culpeper Minute Men Chapter is pleased to announce the 199091 DAR Good Citizen of Rappahannock County High School, Jeremy Tole, son of John R. and Judith Tole, Woodville, VA. Little League baseball
registration Feb. 23 The Rappahannock Athletic Association will hold its second registration for Little League baseball on Saturday, Feb. 23 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Amissville fire hall and the Rappahannock County Elementary School. The registration fee will be $15 per child, with an additional $1 charge for laminated Babe Ruth cards.
