The original Skyline Drive included more than 40 miles of stone wall roadside barriers. The native stone walls did not meet safety standards for roadside barriers. Designing special stone masonry walls with a concrete core that met both construction and aesthetic requirements was a difficult engineering challenge.
Superintendent Bill Wade said “this award recognizes the outstanding efforts of many National Park Service employees in rehabilitating the Skyline Drive. We wanted to be environmentally sensitive, innovative and people conscious. Through their innovative efforts, we were able to rehabilitate this historic roadway to current safety standards while retaining the historic appearance.”
