The Rappahannock Panthers continued their roller-coaster ride to the Bull Run District tournament this week, ending the season in front of a standing-room-only Parents’ Night crowd with a blow-out win against Stonewall Jackson on Tuesday, 95-71.
The Panthers rebounded from a disappointing loss on Feb. 12 against Strasburg to rout Manassas Park Friday night, 78-63, on the Cougars’ home turf. The game featured a runaway second half in which the Panthers dominated, racking up 50 points in 16 minutes.
Coach Gary Leake continued his season-long experiment in freely substituting from the bench, looking for the right combination of desire and technique from a team that has proven it has a deep reserve capability.
Against Strasburg last week, the Panthers led most of the game, breaking open a 19-10 lead after the first quarter, then adding another five points while holding the Rams scoreless for the next three minutes.
Then, Strasburg answered with a run of its own, racking up 13 points while holding the Panthers to a lone free thro# to move within two points, 25-23, before Bobby Jenkins nailed a basket at the buzzer to open Rappahannock’s lead to 27-23.
The Rams came out of the locker room with a new intensity, adding 12 points to the Panthers’ four to take the lead for the first time, 33-31. But Rappahannock returned the volley with a 12 point rally of its own while holding the Rams to three points, opening the lead to 43-38 as the third quarter ended.
Robert Cameron sparked the Rams’ offense in the final quarter, scoring nine points as the lead seesawed back and forth.
As the game clock ticked down past one minute, the score was tied at 56 and the Panthers played a stall offense to run out the clock before going for a last second basket and the win.
But once again, Cameron was in the right place, stealing the ball after a poorly executed in-bounds pass went afield with 11 seconds left. Heading for the basket, Cameron was fouled by Paul Hitt, but made both shots of a one-and-one opportunity to clinch the game for the Rams, 58-56.
Bobby Jenkins led the Panthers both offensively and on the boards, scoring 17 points while collecting seven rebounds. Paul Hitt contributed another 16 points, while James Roy added 11.
