School Board Chairman Beverly Massie asked Dr. Gangel to list proposals with his budget that would indicate how additional money would be spent if it is available.
On another money front, Dr. Gangel reported that there is both good and bad news about the elementary school roof. The school has experienced several leaks through the Owens-Coming Fiberglass membrane on the roof. The leaks have been particularly troubling in the gymnasium and cafeteria area, although there have been some in other parts of the building.
Dr. Gangel reported that because of Assistant Superintendent Robert Chappell’s “pleasantly persistent and pushy” communications, Owens-Coming has agreed to put another membrane on the roof over the gymnasium and cafeteria at no expense to the school system and to spend up to five days on additional repairs to the roof.
Mr. Chappell said that the value of this work will be at least $15,000, but he reported that the bad news was that while the damage was being assessed, they discovered that several of the ‘Tectem” panels in the ceiling had slipped and would need to be replaced. This will cost $5,600. The ‘Tectem” panels are made from a combination of cement and straw, he said.
