Rappahannock residents are among but a few Virginians who don’t have to pay tipping fees for trash dumped at the county landfill.
A survey of localities in the South, including Virginia, North and South Carolina, Tennessee, Maryland and Alabama released earlier this month shows that tipping fees are increasing as a means of paying for the costs of landfills.
Of the 75 Virginia localities that responded to the survey, out of 125 forms sent out, 24 are funded entirely by local government funds and charge no tipping fees, 13 are funded entirely by tipping fees and 38 are funded by a combination of local government funds and tipping fees.
In our area, Culpeper and Madison counties, like Rappahannock, do not charge tipping fees. Fauquier County charges $38 per ton and Warren County charges $12.50. Page County did not respond to the survey.
Tipping fees charged in Virginia ranged from a low of $1.43 per ton charged in Henry County to a high of $72 per ton charged in Powhatan County. The state average is $27.
Rappahannock does charge tipping fees of $5 per load for construction debris and $1 per tire for automobile tires.
According to the survey tipping fees throughout the region increased 17 percent between 1990 and 1991 and 21 percent between 1991 and 1992.
