Draper Aden Associates, an engineering firm that carries out waste management projects. Localities were asked whether or not they had recycling programs. Almost all localities in Virginia do. Rappahannock estimated 15 percent of its trash is recycled. Culpeper County claimed to recycle 20 percent; Warren claimed 25 percent recycled. Fauquier claimed to recycle 12 percent of its trash, and Madison County claimed to recycle 10 percent.
In the region as a whole 83 percent of localities reported having recycling programs, up from 72 percent in 1991. Rappahannock News Graphic/John Brelschneider Rappahannock does not have a scale for weighing trash. Forty-nine percent of the localities in Virginia reported that they have scales. On the other hand, the county does have a liner and a leachate collection system. In the state as a whole, 30 percent of the localities report having a liner under their landfills and 35 percent having a leachate collection system.
Virginia localities were less likely than those in other parts of the region to feel that the state Department of Waste Management is responsive to their needs. Thirtythree percent of the Virginia localities reported that their state agency is responsive to their needs.
