The Fir RA program, explained Mr. Williams, has been around since the 1970s, but in 1991, had been intensified to include more comprehensive record keeping for all individuals, not just fanners, who used pesticides.
Mr. Williams, whose family owns Williams Orchards, was bom and raised in Rappahannock County. His grandfather planted, what today is a 35-acre orchard, around 1915 after he had moved to the county when he married Mr. Williams’s grandmother.
A graduate of Rappahannock High School and VPI, Mr. Williams ran the orchard with his mother and brother for a number of years before he decided to go to work for the Extension Service.
“I really have enjoyed my job here,” said Mr. Williams. “I’m going to miss it and the people here in Rappahannock, but it made sense to take this new job because state funding for the Extension Service has gotten shaky this past year and who knows what will happen.”
