Farmers
all wet,
but happy
It has been an unusual growing season; it’s hard to find a fanner to complain about the weather.
For most Rappahannock farmers this season has been very good for growing crops.. With cooler than average temperatures and higher than average rainfall, pastures are green, com is growing very well and most fruits are doing well.
Even grape growers, who can take a much drier season than most fruit growers, say their crops are doing well.
Chuck Raney, whose Farvelu Vinyard is the county’s only winery as well as a vinyard, says, “We haven’t had any real problems with the grapes. We’ve had rain off and on with sunny weather in between. So far I don’t see any problems. The crop is as big as last year. We can get by with one or two rains per month, but last year, with no rain, it dragged out the ripening process.”
The rains have caused sprays to be washed off the crops, but Mr. Raney said the sprays still do some good, “I’ve sprayed in the morning
