The annual aerial reconnaissance by the Virginia State Police proved successful last week, with overflights of the county yielding two patches of homegrown marijuana, according to Sheriff John Henry Woodward.
Woodward said about a dozen plants were found in an isolated area off Route 612 in Old Hollow, and another 42 plants were found in a patch off Route 620 near Five Forks. He said the plants, from 3-6 feet tall, had apparently benefited from the abundant moisture.
An investigation into the illegal crop is continuing, the sheriff said, and charges are pending. The seizure was valued at approximately $2,000 per plant, Woodward said.
In other police news last week:
• Samuel Berry, 38, of Washington, faces charges of grand larceny and assault as a result of an incident Aug. 16. Woodward said Berry’s girlfriend, Patricia Ross, reported that Berry allegedly assaulted her and took her car without permission. The sheriff said Berry is now in custody in the Orange County Jail in a charge of operating a motor vehicle after having been declared a habitual offender.
