Interact Theatre Company’s production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s “H.M.S. Pinafore” will arrive at The Theatre at Washington, Va. this weekend fresh from rave reviews during its just-concluded runs in Maryland and Washington, I).C. The only chance to see the show in Virginia will be at The Theatre at Washington, Va. at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 22 and at 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 23.
For the past three weeks, Interact's “Pinafore” has been listed in The Washington Post “Critics’ Picks” of their “favorite shows of the week.” The Post said, “If you’re lucky enough to purchase a ticket (the show was packed Saturday night. . .), be sure to watch out for the ensemble numbers.”
The ensemble numbers “are wonderfully choreographed down to the smallest detail.” Among individual mentions - Steve Cramer’s “light tenor was perfect for the role” of Able Seaman Ralph Rackstraw, and Scott Benedict’s “acting was nonpareil” as the beleagurered Captain Corcoran. Ashley Hancock, “playing a 200pound Mrs. Buttercup, cleverly resisted the temptation to ham the role much beyond his already burlesque girth.”
Last summer, Interact performed “The Pirates of Penzance” for an appreciative audience at The Theatre at Washington, Va. As with the current show, “Pirates” had earlier been presented in Maryland. After seeing “Pinafore” last month, a Maryland critic wrote, “Like ‘Pirates,’ ‘Pinafore’ is a story of triumph of love over social class and how being born into the upper crust is merely the luck of the draw.
