Over the next three years the school will receive $609,000 to bring computerized learning to fourth grade. A team has been hired and the project is underway. The team is developing a curriculum for the local school. Instruction will be provided in English, mathematics, science and social studies on computers which will be built into the desks in fourth grade classrooms.
Currently fourth graders are testing the instructional materials as they are being developed and are learning keyboarding skills as part of the regular instructional program.
In August Susan Parrish helped organize a petition drive to put the question of elected school boards on the ballot. She was successful and county citizens voted overwhelmingly (2,067 to 509) to have school board members elected. The first election will take place in 1995.
The new school board will have the same authority and responsibility as the current one.
Another ongoing event within the county this year has been the four laning of U.S. 211 between Sperryville and Washington. The first part of the job, from Washington to the Covington River at Gid Brown Hollow is nearly complete. That work has been done by L.F. Franklin of Stephenson, which bid $1,988,739 for the job.
The second half of the construction project, from the Covington to Sperryville, is being done by Haynes Brothers of Chatham for $3,296,024.
Scholarships
now available
The Department of Social Services is currently offering tuition scholarships for college courses for child care providers. The scholarships are funded through the Child Care and Development Block Grant.
The scholarships will cover the cost of one three hour course at a community college or may be applied toward the cost of selected coursework at a four year college.
The courses funded include courses in basic child development, creative activities, behavior management and one additional course leading to the Career Studies Certificate in Early Childhood Programs.
