is a poet who holds a Masters in Russian Language and Literature and a Ph.D. in Liberal Arts. She headed a team to study the Russian peoples’ view of art for the Pushkin Museum in Moscow before emigrating in 1986.
She will be accompanied by Robin Purnell, a painter and resident of Rappahannock, who has recently returned from three years in St. Petersburg where she exhibited her work at m^jor museums.
Robin’s husband in the early ’80s served as the Human Rights Officer for the U.S. Embassy in Moscow to monitor Soviet violations of the Helsinki Accords.
The two artists were drawn together at that time by artistic concerns and the influences of political events. Robin and Maryanne will present their experience from different perspectives of the struggle for free expression under Stalin’s brutal successors and the newly liberated culture of Russia.
March 21 Francis Deng will present the storytelling of the Dinka tribe of the African Sudan. Mr. Deng is an oral historian and novelist as well as the son of a paramount chief of the Dinka trible.
Mr. Deng is also a Senior Fellow of the Brookings Institution, Sudan’s former Ambassador to the United States, Canada, and Scandinavia, and recently was appointed personal representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations on the problem of displaced people in the world.
