I understand that you have been busy in the hurricane relief business in Florida with your insurance company. I imagine that stepped up your Christmas spirit!
I was musing over Christmasses past. Thinking of writing an article for the paper. I was reliving the Christmas of 1970 and cringing from the memory. That was in my last months of addictive drinking.
I have written about addictions for the column before. The response I get from people on 1 the street makes me reluctant to write about it. They, the readers in general, do not like to read that kind of material. Somehow they are repulsed. They are uncomfortable with me.
One of my friends, took me aside after one article and whispered, “I admire your courage in talking about alcoholism, my wife was in recovery for many years.”
Here, a man who had witnessed the miracle and joy of recovery and he had to whisper about it. How do you figure that?
Anyway, since I got the . synapses moving on the subject, I might as well burden you with it. First, as my favorite nephew, I know it will not bother you and second you have a sister-in-law in the acute stage of alcoholism who could use a little inspiration.
I understand that shels in jail now. Tell her how lucky she is to be recovering there and not dying in some more respectable place.
I was separated from my family in 1970 and working (drinking is what I was doing) at a job from which 1 knew I was going to be fired. The children were coming to see me on Christmas ' day and stay for a while. I was determined not to drink so on Christmas morning there was no ' alcohol in the house. It was a 1 holiday with no beverage stores open.
