My friend made the point that since Ms. Terry, the state’s attorney general the past seven years, is not opposed for the nomination she shouldn’t need much money at this stage of the game.
But they are wrong. She spent, for instance, nearly $113,(K)0 in the period from Oct. 24 to Nov. 28 this year. Running for governor in a growing and sprawling state such as Virginia isn’t chopped liver.
Staff and consultants and campaign space have to be in place now. Planning must get underway and costly fund raising appeals mounted. There is always something that must be done and costs money so those who run must find ways to keep a cash flow coming in that doesn’t exceed that going out.
In Ms. Terry’s case, since she may not have to seriously battle anyone for the nomination, it means that she may have a million or more in the bank as the general election starts, giving her a big financial advantage over her Republican challenger.
