miserable. I could not smile, talk, or participate with my loved ones. I could not love my loved ones. All that I could do was pace back and forth until the next day.
Looking back on my life, there were only two times when I should have had something to drink and didn’t. The first was my wedding night in 1946 to remove some inhibitions and the other was Christmas, 1970, to remove the withdrawal. The other 25 years I had something to drink and should not have.
The thirst was quenched the next morning so the rest of the holiday was nearly tolerable. I was fired from the job on the first day after the holidays.
1 knew that I had lost everything, that my life was over. I moved to my old home town determined to just disappear. The recovery, the great miracle of recovery, started right there in Twin Falls, Idaho, your home town.
Transport us now to the Christmas of 1971. I was still unemployed. I borrowed $40 from a friend that I had not alienated. Another friend loaned me a cabin in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, near where my children lived.
On that Christmas day the people I truly loved came back to me. The Christmas of 1971 was not only the best Christmas but the best day I have ever known.
