Welby Lynn and the state of Virginia took first place for the scrapbook she assembled for the National Junior Classical League Convention in Knoxville, Tenn., July 31 through Aug. 5.

'At last year’s convention at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, Welby was elected historian for the Virginia delegation. That made her responsible for the state’s scrapbook to be submitted at this year’s convention.

This meant that she would try to include reports on events in many of the state’s 105 chapters of the Junior Classical League. She was able to include reports from 23. The scrapbook also included several pages on last year’s national convention and this year’s state convention.

However Welby’s scrapbook was far more than the usual collection of pictures and notices.

For the cover she created a wooden picture frame and filled it with a mosaic tile picture. She made the tiles herself, painted and glazed them and laid them carefully into the pattern.
