Last Thursday night’s heavy rains produced over 5 inches of rain in a short period, causing flash flooding throughout the Amissville area. On roads Routes 639 and 730 residents are accustomed to having Indian Run flood the roads several times a year but last Thursday they were literally trapped in, as all surrounding roads were also flooded.
Thanks to the heroic efforts of Amissville Volunteer Fire and Rescue personnel, nine people were rescued at Cross Creek. One elderly gentleman had to be carried out in a stretcher by six rescuers while they held onto ropes as they crossed the swift, waist-high waters. /
We had just experienced heavy flooding just two weeks earlier on July 27 which again washed out Route 639 at Indian Run. This time, however, repair costs will probably be more when considering repairs to the trucks involved in an accident at the scene in which one VDOT truck plowed into the back of another VDOT truck.
A Country Music Festival will be held Saturday, Aug. 20 at Amissville Carnival Grounds. Rain date is Aug. 21. Gates open at 10:30 a.m. Music begins at 1 p.m. Cost is $10 per person. Children under 12 free.
