Joyce and Albert Wharton of Sperryville have opened two new businesses on U.S. 211 in Sperryville.
Mrs. Wharton is running the Christmas Cabin, located near the Country Elegance Store near the western end of Sperryville. She opened the shop on July 4, and has filled it with all kinds of Christmas goodies.
Many years ago, Country Elegance was a restaurant, and the little cabins next to it were cottages rented out for the night.
Mrs. Wharton said she has always loved Christmas, and is enjoying having her own store which sells all Christmas items. She makes some of the crafts herself, and is learning more all the time. She only . wishes she had more time to produce more.
One of her best selling items is the bride and groom teddy bears. She has a six-foot Christmas tree decorated, and the rest of the 10 by 15 foot room also has various ornaments, snowballs, stuffed animals, doll clothes, honey, preserves and cider.
Mrs. Wharton said, “I want to appeal to the local people mostly. To make it at business in this county you need the local people behind you,” she said.
She said it is interesting meeting all the people who come by the shop. Soon she may be selling baked goods also, and there is a picnic table outside the shop where people can enjoy them.
The store is open on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sundays from 12:30 to 5 p.m.
Further up the road, toward downtown Sperryville, Mrs. Wharton’s husband Albert runs Wharton’s Gifts and Produce. It is located in the one-story aqua building with pink trim, not far from Estes Mill on U.S. 211.
