Because of the holiday weekend they weren’t able to get oil for the furnace delivered, so they fired up the wood stove. .
Very early Tuesday morning the baby started kicking. Mrs. Berger woke up and smelled smoke. Mr. Berger went to investigate and found the room behind the room with the woodstove on fire. A chimney fire had become a house fiise. The fire quickly spread to the attic. They got out and called for help:
As night turned to day, volunteer fire departments from Castleton, Sperryville and Salem, joined by tanker trucks from Amissville and Washington, battled the blaze. The fire was finally out by mid morning, but most of one side of their new house was burned beyond repair. Most of their personal belongings were lost in the fire.
