tendent David Gangel noted that the school system just completed a 14room addition to the elementary school and that there are seven special education classrooms in the school and two rooms for speech therapists. When the elementary school opened there was one special education classroom for retarded students.
Now the program includes providing a sign language interpreter for a deaf pre-schooler and classes for learning disabled and emotionally disturbed children. Some of these students are Served by resource teachers for only part of the day. Others require a self-contained classroom for only special education students. State laws restrict the number of students special education teachers can serve. The classes are much smaller than most classes for regular students.
The American With Disabilities Act requires that the school system make the schools accessible to students in wheelchairs. That will mean providing ramps so these students can get onto the stages at the two schools.
There are 10 teachers working full time with special education students, seven in the elementary school and three in the high school. In addition there are two speech teachers. There are five teachers’ aides working full time or nearly full time with special education students. In
