Let’s Get Real!

“Let’s get real,” you say. Children today are in charge of their own food and exercise charge of their own food and exercise choices and don’t take kindly to demands from you. That’s certainly true for many. Nevertheless, there are tactics you can take to help children along:

Try friendly encouragement to get your child to make appropriate food choice - instead of using force of coercion. For example, recommend, (don’t insist) that your child choose a grilled chicken cutlet over a cheeseburger in his/her favorite fatfood restaurant. They may not take your suggestion every time, but you can educate and at the same time avoid making food choices a power struggle.

Take a positive approach. Talk nore about the right food choices ;han the wrong ones. A positive approach can reinforce good eating labits instead of creating a fear of ’ood. For example, tell your child you’re serving spaghetti with tonato sauce because it’s good and ilso happen to be a nutritious, ower-fat choice.

Get to know your child’s eating mbits away from home. The plan he snacks and meals he/she eats at lome to balance out their daily fat ind nutrient intake. For example, if mu child eats fast foods for lunch ind cookies for snacks, offer cereal, ruit and one percent or nonfat milk or breakfast. Also, serve lower-fat neal for dinner. That way, you hild’s eating patterns over several lays will consist of adequate nutriion without too many calories.
