regulations enter into the cost of providing special education and there is some funding from both levels for the program, but it is far from covering the cost to the county.
The school budget includes about $151,500 from the state for special education and $68,350 from the federal government.
When a student is recommended for evaluation for special education a very definite process is set into place with regimented time guidelines. There will be a psychological evaluation and usually a social one as well. A committee that includes parents, teachers, administrators, and counsellors will develop an “Individual Educational Program” for each student who is identified as needing special education services. This must be reviewed and updated at least every three years.
“Our job is to serve all children,” Dr. Gangel said. “One of the things we have to balance is how we can serve all children and achieve the greatest possible good with the resources we have. ”
