Alternatives
To Abortion
To the Editor:
Last month the government released figures showing a 15 year low in abortions. It’s great to know more and more young people are taking responsibility for their actions. Abstinence programs like “True Love Waits” are sweeping the country.
A Crisis Pregnancy Center recently opened in Warrenton at 578 Old Waterloo Rd. (next to Child Health). Susan Kruchten is the Director. The Center offers at 24-hour hotline, provides counseling, pregnancy tests, and information on abortion alternatives. If mothers decide to keep their babies, the Center provides housing, clothing, formula and furniture. Adoption referrals are also made, (by the way, the Center would be grateful to receive any of these items in good condition for use of new mothers and their infants.) Call the Center at 347-7770. Other centers located in the area inade Manassas, Charlottesville'and Winchester. Warrenton is open 10 to 4, Monday and Friday and 10 to 7 on Thursdays.
Even First Lady Hillary Clinton said she believed abortion was wrong in a recent interview with Newsweek. I recognize this is a very controversial issue; however, it is still legal. We can only work to reduce the number being performed. With the AIDS scare and a 30 percent failure rate of condoms, wise young people are waiting. Sadly, some use the procedure as a method of birth control, having multiple abortions, which increase the risk of sterility in later years when they are ready to marry, settle down, and have a family.
There may be special circumstances warranting an abotion to save the life of the mother or severely deformed infant. Some believe rape and incest should also be exceptions. In Roe vs. Wade 24 years ago, Norma McCorvey claimed rape; but after ruling she admitted she had lied.
I hope anyone comtemplating the procedure will at least visit a Crisis Pregnancy center to learn of the development stage of their baby (heart beat 18 days; brain waves 40 days) and consider adop^on if they’re unable to keep the infant. There are more adoption requests each year than there are abortions. Give your child a chance at life!
