decision-making; conflict resolution; goal setting; vocational planning; communications skills; and self-development; all within the context of the family and focusing on individual responsibility.

Many of AAFC’s 20,000 members are teachers of family life education and professors preparing teachers for these programs. Inherent to our profession is the belief in parents’ rights to make choices about their children’s education. However, Allen’s proposed requirement that parents would have to actively opt into the family life program in order for their children to attend the classes means that those children whose parents are less involved—the very youth who need this education the most— would, in effect, be denied access to tl^ese courses.

We realize that we cannot ensure that all teens are responsible with respect to sexual activity. But we can verify through research and practice within our field that family life courses help students develop the strong self esteem and skills they need to make solid choices in this area. Because human development begins before birth and is ongoing, family life courses in public schools cannot be viewed as a “total answer” to the problems of young people. They are, however, a vital part of the solution. \

I am a 29 year old lifelong resident of Washington. I have a problem accepting the remarks and attitudes of others who have stated their opinions about the killing of the bear and about the photo of the bear in the Dec. 14 issue of the Rappahannock News,

I am a country girl. I’ve always raised chickens. My Daddy has raised all kinds of farm animals and has taken care of many others. I’ve been around animals all of my life. I’ve also been involved with putting dinner on the table. However, I have never found any venison or bear at the supermarket. I have had the experience of hutching hogs and sheep, plucking chickens and turkeys, and skinning deer, rabbit and squirrel. Although I have a weak stomach, my experiences have made my strong and realistic. I have no problem with the bear photo. ,

I love wild animals even more than domestic in some cases. I take a lot of walks “in the wilderness.” I’ve seen nature at its best. I’ve seen all kinds of wildlife—deer, turkey,
