Bertha, who was bom in Tennessee, got her undergraduate degree in art from the University of Tennessee. In 1963 she moved to Virginia to settle and start a family.
Like many mothers, she opted to stay at home and be available to her children, a boy and girl, during their formative years.
When they went off to school she felt it was time to explore the world around her.
She wanted an outlet for her talent as an artist and to find out if she had the wherewithal to make it as a professional. So, she volunteered to work with clients at a psychosocial rehab center near Alexandria where she taught painting.
