At last the mystery was no longer a mystery; the winter quarters of the Chimney Swift was known. Though Chimney Swifts nest throughout the United States and southern Canada, all spend the winter in a restricted area in the Amazon Basin of Peru.
Swifts originally nested by the thousands in great hollow trees that existed in American forests before the coming of white men. As these trees were removed, houses with chimneys were built. Chimney Swifts quickly adapted. Now they are declining as chimneys are smaller and many are lined with metal to which swifts cannot cling. In Virginia, however, old houses are cherished. These offer nesting and roosting sites for swifts. The cluttering notes of swifts in chimneys are as reassuring as the soft liquid notes of Purple Martins with which swifts share the summer sky.
