She took a decidedly bold step. She enrolled in a graduate program at the University of Virginia for counseling.
It was an exciting and demanding period in her life, she said, but also a troubled one for her marriage broke up.
She became full time student, full time art teacher and full time single parent. It was a difficult and trying time, she said.
“However, that which doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger,” she said.
She and her children made it through the difficult times and Bertha graduated from UVA in 1977 with a masters in counseling. Her children grew up, went to college and now
