Dismayed
over fees
To the Editor:
I am a member of the congregation of Trinity Episcopal Church in Washington and was totally dismayed and enraged when I saw the sign posted at the entrance to our parking lot in Washington on July 4 — “Handicapped Parking, $5, $2 for Rappahannock Residents". The Vestry of Trinity was approached about using our parking lot for handicapped parking and we gave permission. No mention was made of parking fees. I worked at the church all day on the Fourth and did not see the sign or I would have removed it immediately.
I know the congregation of Trinity joins me in offering sincere apologies for this unfortunate act and I apologize to all those who were charged for the use of our parking lot. I especially apologize to those who would have liked to use the parking facilities but would not or could not afford the fee.
Trinity Episcopal Church provides free use of the parking lot to anyone having business in the town as well as our worship and fellowship facilities. This is part of our outreach program and goes along with other civic minded groups and individuals who provide free services and space for the July 4 celebration not the least of which is Mr. William Carrigan and the use of his beautiful home for the fireworks display. The celebration of our nation’s birthday should not provide a means for certain groups to take advantage of our less fortunate citizens.
In the future, and I feel the congregation of Trinity will approve, the parking lot will be available for handicapped parking during the July 4 celebration free of charge.
By this letter, I challenge the recipients of the parking fees realized on the Fourth to make a donation to the Social Services Department of Rappahannock County in the amount of DOUBLE the
