Though Y2Kbug fears were not nearly realized, reports indicated'that some problems were experienced. Here are a few:
• Prisoner and detainee records in Naples, Italy suffered from the bug—some detainees were scheduled for trials in 2099, while some prisoner’s scheduled for release on Jan. 10 were shown to have been release in 1900.
• Gu Qingsheng, a Chinese novelist who wrote stories about the Millennium Bug, suffered the consequences himself when all of his files were lost after his computer rolled over to 2000.
• A journalist in Cologne, Germany was the beneficiary of a Y2K bug-induced deposit of 3 billion marks ($1.56 billion) to his bank account.
• A customer returning a movie to Super Video rental in Albany, N.Y., was presented with a $91,250 late fee after computers showed the tape was 100 years late.
• Computer bugs at a hospital in Ansan, South Korea caused a newborn’s birthday to be recorded as Jan. 1, 1900.
• In Sweden some 100,000 Internet bank customers were unable to log in before updating their web browsers.
• 900 families in apartments in Pyongchon, South Korea lost their heat at midnight when a central heating system malfunctioned.
