We are writing to express our appreciation for the Gerald
Ochs’ article about the Christmas program put on in the Chateauville Foundation’s theater, as well as to clarify a misconception about Hearthstone Whole Family Learning Center.
We, too, are proud of the artistic and academic talent that is being nurtured in young people at our school. We are glad Mr. Ochs shared his positive perceptions with the community, because we hope that more children can experience the joy of using the arts as a valuable tool in their learning process.
The point of clarification we would like to make is that Hearthstone is a separately funded entity from Chateauville Foundation, which your readers may not understand. Hearthstone was founded in 1995 by a group of parents, not by the Chateauville Foundation, which a previous article by Mr. Ochs stated.* The Maazel’s Foundation has been supportive from the ground up. We currently receive 21 percent of our budget from Chateauville. These funds are used so that we can have an economically diverse population, allowing financial aid to be given. The Foundation also supports the music program in that 21 percent. Hearthstone does not have regular access to the theater, which is used only for special occasions.
One of the key factors in the unique structure of Hearthstone is that we are a parent cooperative. Each family donates at least eight hours a month to the school in such diverse activities as teaching classes, cleaning, doing secretarial work, doing carpentry, etc. We believe such involvement by the parents adds to the strength of the family, which is very stressed in this time. We applaud all the parents who participate actively in their children’s education in the public schools and at the area private schools.
As a new institution, there are many start-up needs which are still not in place, such as a bus for transportation, more elaborate science equipment and benefits for teachers. Hearthstone is seeking funds for these needs, not looking to Chateauville to expand their already large gift, which is ear
