The West African nation of Gambia was the only j country in the world seriously affected by power outages and other disruption, some of which could be traced to the millennium computer bug.
• Japan’s Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications (MPT) reported that the nation’s information-communications industry was hit by four problems that were j confirmed to be year 2000-related.
• A glitch at a Japanese nuclear reactor was caused by a failed clock on a control rod monitoring system that showed Saturday’s date as Feb. 6, 2036.
• The Y2K bug infected a computer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Y-12 nuclear weapons plant but did not affect operations or workers, and the exact nature of the malfunction was not disclosed because the computer controls a classified function.
• Dennis Olson, a 41-year-old Wisconsin engineer and computer consultant, spent $20,000 on food, drinking water, medical supplies and a generator to survive the Y2K chaos that never occurred. The supplies laid in for his family of four included 400 boxes of Hamburger Helper, 175 pounds of pasta, 50 bars of soap, and nine tubes of toothpaste. “Thank God, we got through to night,” he said. “ I did the happy dance. But I don’t think we’re out of the woods until May or June. Plenty of computer problems can turn up between now and then.”
