So end the comments of Henry David Thoreau as noted Jan. 29, 1860. It’s a hymn of praise and thanks for the apple orchard. Today, owls and bluebirds don’t find as many hollow limbs for their nests, nor do caterpillars lay as many eggs; they are poisoned out now. Much of the rest is unchanged though there are fewer birds in the year 2000.
I would only add that the wood duck would not nest in a hollow limb of an apple tree unless there was a pond, lake , or river nearby. Thoreau assumed readers knew that.
