Ground level ozone levels in our area do not only come from locally produced emissions. Ozone forms in the atmosphere through chemical reactions between nitrogen oxide and volatile organic compound gases that are released not just in this area, but also hundreds of miles away.

Such transported emissions contribute to ground level ozone in this region and elsewhere in the eastern U.S. Further progress in the control of transported ozone, as well as implementation of the regional plan, will be needed to meet the health standard.

Recent plans announced by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to control transported ozone will help our area keep the ozone trend line moving downward and, in time, meet the ozone standard.
