2K?
BY GERALD OCHS
Rappahannock News Special Writer
Ever since the crest of the year 2000 rolled westward through the globe’s twenty-four time zones, I have searched for the ultimate Y2K story. One that would justify somehow the 200 billion dollars spent on assuring computers’ compliance with the rollover rules, or the 5 billion expended by the US energy industry to make certain that the current would flow unimpeded by Y2K gremlins, or that would support the faint-at-hearts’ purchase of an extra 750 gallons of potable water or the econo-pak of twenty-four D cell batteries or the hamster-powered portable radio.
I carried my Sony Watchman portable TV with 3” screen to the New Year’S festivities at the National Press Club in a futile effort to capture the images of Y2K havoc oh CNN when the clock passed the midnight meridian in obscure settlements just across the International Date Line; places with names like Nukalofa and Rawaki and Anadyr.
