Steve Miller of Amissville is attempting to create what will be known as the Passage of the Armies in Rappahannock County. The Passage will be a trail for hiking, biking, and horseback riding and will include a car tour as well.
The trails and driving tours will trace the passage of Union and Confederate armies through the county, linking historic and scenic sites, villages, and commercial and agricultural businesses. The Passage will capitalize on existing resources consistent with the comprehensive plan and residents’ desires.
The project intends to encourage and conserve open spaces, including incentives to retain natural environments, such as rivers. Another intention is to offer an educational medium on the county’s role in the Civil War for residents, students and the general public.
Trail heads will be located in and near the villages of Amissville, Woodville, Sperryville and Chester Gap. The proposed trail heads could include: parking areas, ,rest rooms, picnic areas and potential commercial enterprises, such as cafes, restaurants and shops.
Hopefully, the endeavor will offer an attraction for tourists and encourage outside dollars into the county, providing an expanded economic base for new, low impact commercial enterprises in the villages. The developers also see the project as providing incentive and support for scenic overviews and historic preservation.
