telecommunications lapses in Oslo, elevator failures in Paris, terrorist attacks in New York, 747’s falling out the sky over the Atlantic, whalewatcher boats mis-navigated into Pacific reefs by noncompliant GPS systems. All to no avail.
I returned to Rappahannock knowing that I would at least find Y2K scars all over the farm. But my aging computer booted up just fine, the chickens were healthy and bore no obvious signs of Y2k stress, the cows eyeballed me as though it were the first of any new year, and the surviving white-tailed deer flashed me signst of welcome—to January 1, 2000 and to Rappahannock County.
The techies had tried as they might to frighten me into buying a new Y2K-compliant computer, or at least a $299.99
