The new season at Theatre at Washington, Va. opens on Saturday, Jan. 13, with an 8 p.m. concert by jazz guitarists Jimmy Bruno and Joe Beck. This will mark the third time that Bruno has played at the Theatre, but the first time that he will be joined here by Joe Beck.
Their CD "Polarity” was issued on the Concord label in 2000, and some of the music to be played at the Theatre performance will be drawn from that superb recording, which includes favorites such as "Summertime," "How Long Has This Been Going On," and "Eleanor Rigby.”
Bruno and Beck are considered to have quite disparate musical styles.
Hence the title "Polarity" was chosen for the first recorded pairing of these fine guitarists. (Bruno says he thought their CD might have been called "The Odd Couple.") In fact, however, the dazzling technical virtuosity of both musicians, and the remarkable musical empathy between them shown in their recording hold out the promise of a quite extraordinary live performance.
Joe Beck is an accomplished and widely respected guitarist-composerarranger, and he has done much of the arranging and re-harmonization of the music which will be performed at the Jan. 13 concert. Besides playing with Jimmy Bruno, Beck has played and recorded with Duke Ellington, Paul Simon, and many other musical greats.
He has also arranged and produced records for Frank Sinatra, Gloria Gaynor, and Esther Phillips, while composing music for TV and film for over thirty years.
Jimmy Bruno was featured a few years ago on National Public Radio's Morning Edition, in an interview which is now an NPR Jazz Feature.
